Retaining
Walls
Armour stone, segmental block, and natural stone retaining walls built to manage grade, control erosion, and create usable outdoor space — properly engineered for Ontario soil and climate conditions.
A wall that fails in year three isn't a wall — it's a liability.
Most retaining wall failures come down to two things: inadequate base depth and ignored drainage. Clay soil expands when wet. Freeze-thaw cycles exert enormous pressure. A wall built without understanding those forces will move — it's a matter of when, not if.
At Arcadia, we assess drainage before we design. We excavate to proper depth, install granular base and drainage tile where required, and use materials rated for Ontario's climate. An owner is on site throughout — not just for the quote and the final walkthrough.

Armour Stone
Large-format natural boulders set by machine to create bold, structural walls that handle significant grade changes. Armour stone is the highest-load option — ideal for steep slopes, large retaining applications, and properties where the wall will be a prominent visual feature. Each stone is individually placed and locked in position. No mortar required; the mass and placement provide stability.
Segmental Retaining Block
Engineered concrete block systems — brands like Unilock, Techo-Bloc, and Allan Block — installed in courses with proper batter (backward lean) and compacted granular backfill. Segmental block is the most versatile option: curves, corners, steps, and varying heights are all achievable. A geogrid reinforcement layer is added at specified intervals for walls over a set height. Clean, finished look that integrates easily with interlock patios and driveways.
Natural Stone & Fieldstone
Dry-stacked or mortared natural stone walls for garden borders, low retaining applications, and decorative features. Fieldstone and cut limestone have an organic, timeless look that fits well with established gardens and heritage-style properties. Best suited for walls under 90cm in height where structural load demands are lower. Can be combined with planting pockets for a softer, integrated look.
Seat Walls & Decorative Walls
Low walls — typically 45–60cm high — built as seating features, garden bed borders, or patio edge definitions. These aren't structural retaining walls but serve as functional design elements that define outdoor spaces, add usable seating, and frame planted areas. Built with the same block and stone materials as taller retaining walls to ensure a cohesive finish across the property.
Retaining Wall Work Across KW
Armour stone, block, and natural stone installations — residential and commercial properties throughout Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, and Guelph.
What Every Retaining Wall Project Needs
These are the factors that determine whether your wall holds for 25 years or starts to lean in three. We assess all of them before we quote.
Drainage & Water Management
Hydrostatic pressure — water building up behind a wall with no exit — is the number one cause of retaining wall failure. Every project we build includes a drainage assessment. We install weeping tile and granular drainage stone behind the wall where required. This is non-negotiable for us, not an upsell.
Base Depth & Compaction
The base must be excavated below the frost line and compacted properly — shortcuts here are what cause walls to shift after the first hard winter. We don't pour a wall over insufficient base preparation regardless of what the schedule pressure is. The wall has to last.
Wall Height & Surcharge Load
Walls over 1 metre, and any wall with surcharge load above it (a driveway, structure, or vehicle access), require engineering consideration. We assess what's above the wall before specifying the build method. Taller walls may require geogrid reinforcement layers or armour stone rather than block.
Soil Type
Clay-heavy soil — common throughout KW — retains water and expands when frozen. A wall design appropriate for sandy or loamy soil may be completely inadequate for clay. We factor local soil conditions into base depth, drainage design, and material selection. What works elsewhere doesn't automatically work here.
Property Lines & Permits
Retaining walls near property lines or above a certain height may require a permit in Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge. We flag these requirements during the site assessment so you're not surprised mid-project. Our quotes include permit coordination where applicable — we don't leave that to you to figure out.
Integration with Existing Hardscape
If you have an existing patio, driveway, or interlock surface nearby, the new wall needs to tie into it cleanly — in both material and grade. We design with the full picture in mind so you don't end up with an awkward junction between old and new work, or a drainage problem created by the new build.
From Assessment to Completion
Every retaining wall project follows the same structured process. No shortcuts, no skipped steps.
Site Visit & Assessment
An owner visits, evaluates grade, drainage, soil, surcharge load, and any permit requirements. We take measurements and photos before we quote anything.
Itemized Quote
You receive a written quote with every element priced separately — excavation, base material, drainage, block or stone, labour, and cleanup. No lump sums.
Excavation & Base
We excavate to proper depth, grade the base, compact the granular layer, and install drainage tile before a single block or stone is set. The foundation is done right or the wall isn't built.
Wall Build & Backfill
Wall is constructed course by course with proper batter and geogrid at specified intervals. Backfill is compacted in lifts. Owner-supervised start to finish. Final walkthrough with you before we leave.
We build walls that don't move.
In Ontario, that means accounting for clay soil, frost depth, and hydrostatic pressure — not just stacking block. Every retaining wall we build is assessed and built with those forces in mind from day one.
Book a Site AssessmentDrainage First
We assess water movement before we design. Every wall we build that requires drainage gets it — no exceptions, no upsells, just proper construction.
Owner on Every Job
An owner of Arcadia is present and supervising throughout the build — not just at the start. Base prep, drainage, geogrid placement, and backfill compaction are all verified by someone accountable.
Ontario Climate Knowledge
We build specifically for KW's freeze-thaw cycles, frost depth, and clay-heavy soils. What works in warmer climates or different soil conditions doesn't work here — we know the difference.
Itemized, Transparent Quotes
Every line item is explained and priced separately. You know exactly what excavation costs, what the drainage adds, and what the material and labour break down to before you commit to anything.
We Stand Behind Our Work
If a wall we build has a problem, we come back. Our reputation in this region depends on walls that hold — so we don't cut corners that would bring us back for the wrong reasons.
Full Scope Capability
We can integrate retaining walls with patio builds, interlock driveways, steps, and planting beds — all in one project, one quote, one crew. No coordinating multiple contractors.
